Overloading dot operator in Java

In Java, the dot operator (.) is used to access members (variables and methods) of a class or object. However, unlike some other programming languages, Java does not allow overloading the dot operator itself. This means that you cannot define different behaviors for the dot operator based on the types of the operands.

However, you can achieve similar functionality by overloading methods within a class, which can then be invoked using the dot operator.

Method Overloading

Let’s see an example of how method overloading can be used to achieve a similar effect to overloading the dot operator:
